I took up Krav in October last year, at the time it had been almost a year since my husband was involved in a serious accident where he broke both his legs and sustained a severe brain injury. Life changed dramatically for our family and my role expanded as a carer for him, almost sole parent for our toddler on top of my pretty demanding day job.

I wanted to find something that would help keep me active, reduce stress levels and give me an escape from my new and somewhat crazy life!

A friend recommended Krav saying it would be right up my street, despite not being sure how he came to that conclusion he was certainly right as I loved it from day one!

I walked into the Wednesday night Brockworth session to be faced with a large number of men, an array of tatts that would give the All Blacks a run for their money and finally some seriously kick ass ladies… but it was too late to turn back. By the end of the night I was impressed with how friendly everyone was, Scott was a patient and motivating instructor and despite feeling completely out of my comfort zone I knew I would be back. I only train on a Wednesday and I don’t mind admitting that I’m slightly sad on a Thursday that I’m so far away from Wednesday.

I’m fitter, I’m more toned and I’m scarily more aware of my surroundings and potential dangers. It’s amazing how the principals of Krav can be applied to everyday life. We are trained to react without thinking, go for the quickest and safest response and if it doesn’t work try something new and just keep going.

Considering I couldn’t punch, kick or block and I have no co-ordination it’s a testament to the instructors and those I train with regards how much I’ve learned in such a small amount of time. During my first few weeks I felt completely out of my comfort zone and I don’t think I would of persevered without the encouragement and help from those I trained with. The classes are varied, fun and challenging and are well pitched to stretch all levels and the people never fail to get me smiling.

I entered into Krav completely clueless about what to expect, I felt an idiot when I started but I can’t believe how much I enjoy it. My confidence is slowly growing and have a new found love for knee kicks and sparring.
